How movies get leaked online remains a mystery to many, especially our Bollywood filmmakers who have pumped in so much money. Some films are believed to have been captured right under the nose of our censors which go unnoticed. The last decade or so some flicks have faced the wrath of this nuisance while some still went on to make big bucks. We look at seven such flicks which were in the news for getting leaked online:
Udta Punjab (2016)
While ‘Udta Punjab’ filmmakers were fighting the censors for its 89 cuts, the leaked copy of the film was available online two days before its release which took the industry by storm. The copy which had a run-time of two hours twenty minutes was immediately removed from the torrent sites. The film somehow managed to have a decent run.
Great Grand Masti (2016)
The third installment of the ‘Masti’ franchise, ‘Great Grand Masti’ is the latest entrant to the list as the complete film of two hours and fourteen minutes got leaked online three weeks before its release date. The sex-comedy was scheduled for 22nd July but due to getting leaked online it got preponed to 15th July.
Manjhi : The Mountain Man (2015)
A biopic based on the life and achievement of Dashrath Manjhi, ‘Manjhi: The Mountain Man’ which released on the 21st August, 2015 found a preview copy of it leaked online on 10th August. Though the cyber police registered a case and arrested a few men, the movie garnered critical appreciation and earned its investment back.
Tera Kya Hoga Johnny (2010)
This Sudhir Mishra film which starred Neil Nitin Mukesh and Soha Ali Khan in the lead also got leaked before its release in 2008. It was reported that a few parts of the film was available online when the post-production was under process. The film finally released in 2010 but went unnoticed at the ticket counters.
Paa (2009)
This R. Balki directed film which was based on a rare genetic condition known as progeria featured Amitabh Bachchan, Vidya Balan and Abhishek Bachchan in the main roles. Not many know that the movie was leaked online a few hours before its release day in December 2009. Fortunately, this didn’t disturb the box-office collections of the film.
Mohalla Assi (Unreleased)
Chandraprakash Dwivedi directorial ‘Mohalla Assi’ which featured Sunny Deol and Sakshi Tanwar in the lead and got into a tussle with the censors for its abusive content, found it leaked on many sites in August 2015. The film was stayed by a Delhi court for allegedly hurting religious sentiments and later got banned by the CBFC in 2016.
Paanch (Unreleased)
Director Anurag Kashyap’s directorial debut ‘Paanch’ got stuck with the censors for its abusive content which the director refused to compromise on. Though the film is yet to get a release date, it’s believed that the director himself leaked the movie online.
