The master film maker Satyajit Ray ( 2 May 1921 – 23 April 1992) directed the film Pather Panchali, which in turn is an adaptation of one of the best novels of one great storyteller - Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay (12 September 1894 – 1 November 1950). The Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar composed the film's soundtrack.
Pather Panchali is a Bengali language drama film which was released in 1955. In this context, a small anecdote - Satyajit Ray ran short of funds midway of developing the movie. He arranged a preview of the partially developed movie to the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, the late Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, to request for further funds to complete the movie. Dr.Roy was overwhelmed seeing the fragmented movie and immediately granted him all the funds to complete it.
Pather Panchali won India's National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 1955, the Best Human Document award at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival, and several other awards, establishing Ray as one of the country's most distinguished filmmakers. It is often featured in lists of the greatest films ever made.
