Lord Canning was the last Governor General of India under East India Company Rule. He was an English statesman and Governor-General of India during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The Rebellion was a major, but ultimately unsuccessful, uprising in India against the rule of the British East India Company, which functioned as a sovereign power on behalf of the British Crown. India was thereafter administered directly by the British government in the new British Raj.

Lord Canning was the last Governor General of India under East India Company Rule.
