Bhopal, India
This happened at the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India, resulting in the exposure of over 500,000 people. Estimates vary on the death toll: the official immediate toll was 2,259, the Madhya Pradesh government says 3,787, other government agencies estimate either 15,000 or 16,000 (8,000 within the first weeks and another 8,000 since). An 8th former employee was convicted but had died before judgment.
