Léon Foucault
Instruments using some of the same principles were developed variously in 1743 and 1817; in 1852 French scientist Jean Bernard Léon Foucault (1826-64) outlined the principles which underly it in its present form, first used the name gyroscope, conducted many experiments with it and was credited with its invention.
