The German invasion of Russia in the Soviet Union
The operation was named after the medieval Emperor, nicknamed Barbarossa, of the Holy Roman Empire, a leader of the Third Crusade in the 12th century. Hitler's Barbarossa decree in 1941 declared that the war would be one of extermination, with the political and intellectual elites to be eradicated.
