Gustav Line It took the Allies from mid-November 1943 to late May 1944 to fight through all the various elements of the Gustav (or Winter) Line, including the battles at Monte Cassino and Anzio. Germany retreated to build comprehensive defences at the Gothic (or Green) Line.
