63,000 BCE
The paintings are a red linear motif in La Pasiega (Cantabria), a hand stencil in Maltravieso (Extremadura), and red-painted speleothems in Ardales (Andalucía). The well-known cave paintings near Santillana del Mar (the Altamira caves), Spain are dated to possibly 34,000 BCE, those in Lascaux, France to about 17,000 – c. 15,000 BCE.
