Eastern Ecuador
The park is an area of 9,823 sq. km within Napo and Pastaza Provinces in Amazonian Ecuador and is primarily rain forest. It is described as the most biologically diverse spot on Earth and is a convergence point for three unique regions, the Equator, Andes Mountains, and the Amazon rainforest. It also lies on top of considerable oil reserves and was the subject of a referendum called the Yasuní-ITT Initiative in 2007 to seek international support and compensation for a plan to leave the oil untapped; in 2013 Ecuador's president deemed the plan to have failed and subsequent licences have been given to explore and mine the oil.
