Ghana
Ashanti chiefdoms were established in the area in the 1670s, and in 1701 were unified into the most powerful political and military state in the West African coastal region. After wars with Britain in the 19th century, Ashanti was incorporated into the Gold Coast colony (Ghana) as a British protectorate in 1900.
