Christopher Marlowe
Christopher Marlowe's "The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus", known as "Doctor Faustus", was first published in 1604, eleven years after Marlowe's death and at least twelve years after the first performance of the play. "Faust: The First Part of the Tragedy", the first part of Goethe's Faust was first published in 1808. "Faust", a grand opera by Charles Gounod to a libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré from Carré's play Faust et Marguerite, in turn loosely based on Goethe's Faust, Part 1, debuted in 1859. Thomas Mann's 1947 "Doktor Faustus: Das Leben des deutschen Tonsetzers Adrian Leverkühn, erzählt von einem Freunde" adapts the Faust legend to a 20th-century context.
