The Western Ghats mountain range starts near the border of Gujarat and Maharashtra and runs approximately 1,600 km (990 miles) down the west coast ending at India's southern tip. The mountains cover 160,000 km2 (62,000 sq. miles) and form the catchment area for complex riverine drainage systems that drain almost 40% of India. They are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and are considered one of the "hottest hotspots" of biological diversity.
