Sixtus IV
Pope Sixtus IV issued a bull in 1478 authorising Ferdinand and Isabella of Aragon and Castile to name inquisitors. The first Spanish inquisitors, operating in Seville, were so severe that the Pope tried to step in but in In 1483 authorised a grand inquisitor for Castile. During that year Aragon, Valencia, and Catalonia were also placed under the Inquisition's power. Pope Paul III authorised a tribunal like the Spanish Inquisition against Portuguese Jews in 1536. He later revoked it but in 1547 it was still in force.
