Hindi (and Sanskrit)
Thugs, first recorded in the 14th century, were fraternities or bands of professional robbers and killers in India. They differed from dacoits, also organised bandits, in that killing was intrinsic to their enterprise. The British carried out a largely successful campaign to eliminate them in the 19th century.
