In 1971, now Dr. Isabella Aiona Abbott, she also became the first woman on Stanford’s biological sciences faculty. She was recognised as the world's leading expert on the algae of the Pacific Ocean basin, and on Hawaiian seaweeds or limu. She has been credited with discovering over 200 different algae species, with many of these named after her.
