Washington is cited as the first President of the United States of America (USA). However, the USA had existed since 1776, and since 1774 the land had recognised a governing body named the Continental Congress of the United Colonies (after 1776 "the United States"). The bodies had several short-term Presidents between 1774 and 1789, before Washington, at the time Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, became President on 30 April 1789. His term lasted until 4 March 1797.
