It was named by a Dutch sailor who was born in Hoorn
Isaac Le Maire, an Amsterdam merchant and Willem Schouten, a ships master of Hoorn, contributed in equal shares, with additional financial support from merchants of Hoorn, to a journey to discover an alternative way to the Far East with two ships, the "Eendracht" and the "Hoorn", that left Holland in June 1615. On 29 January 1616 they saw land which they called "Cape Horne [Kaap Hoorn]".
