Late 1880s and early 1890s
Studio start-ups in 1888-90 included New York Phonograph Company, the Columbia Phonograph Company, the North American Phonograph Company, and the New Jersey Phonograph Company. By 1891, Columbia, New Jersey, New York and Ohio were named as major players in an industry, to which Michigan, New England, Kansas and Louisiana were added by 1892. A similar flowering also happened, slightly later, in Britain.
