It is a public health problem in 44 countries, commonly in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America, and is responsible for the blindness or visual impairment of about 1.9 million people. Glaucoma is damage to the nerve connecting the eye to the brain ; keratoconus is a weakness in the structure of the cornea; uveitis is inflammation of the middle layer of the eye that contains most of the blood vessels.
