The sun was added to the centre of Argentina's flag in 1818, and is known as the Sun of May. It is also a replica of an engraving on the country's first coin, approved in 1813, worth eight escudos (one Spanish dollar). The flag of Uruguay has a similar sun but in its left upper corner.
