Recreate the route taken by Christopher Columbus to the New World
The torch travelled through Italy and Spain to San Salvador Island, Bahamas, and then on to Mexico. These were the first Olympic Games to be staged in Latin America and the first to be staged in a Spanish-speaking country. For the first time also runners from other than just the host nation took part in the relay, and the Olympic cauldron was lighted by a female athlete.
