Central north China
The friable and easily cultivated loess soil of the plateau, south of the Gobi Desert, is responsible for much of the fertility of the North China Plain. The area is seen as an early cradle of Chinese, particularly Han Chinese, civilization. There are other significant loess areas globally but the China Plateau, at about 640,000 km2 (250,000 sq mi), is the largest.
