The Andes
The torrent duck nests in small waterside caves and other sheltered spots, and feeds in fast flowing mountain rivers, usually above 1,500 m (4,900 ft). The species is declining in the northern Andes due to competition by introduced trout for the duck's invertebrate food, and due to pollution, forest destruction and damming of mountain rivers for hydroelectric schemes.
