The reserve is 28,555 hectares (70,560 acres) of woodland, grassland, wetland and forest, interspersed with mountain ranges, rivers, marshes and pans. Of this, 1,000 hectares (2,471 acres) is sand forest. It is thought that sand forests are fragments of ancient coastal dunes which were separated from the ocean over millions of years. Small areas of sand forest are also found in southern Mozambique, and in parts of the Amazon basin in Brazil, Peru, and Colombia.
