The Celtic Football Club
Brother Walfrid, an Irish Marist Brother, formed the club in 1887 in Glasgow with the aim of using income from admissions to the games to alleviate poverty in the city's East End. He was particularly aware of the continuing large influx into Scotland of Irish poor after heightened erosion of living conditions and civil rights in Ireland.
