Map drawing
A loxodrome is a constant straight line path, created when a compass is kept pointing in a constant direction, which cuts a meridian on a given surface at any constant angle except a right angle. On the surface of a sphere it provides a straight line for the Mercator projection which became the standard for maps because of its ability to represent lines of constant course for navigation as straight segments which conserve the angles with the meridians.
