To monitor a protest and potential blockade by French fishermen
Jersey, which is about 22 km (14 mi) from the French coast, shares its fishing waters closely with France which, following the UK's formal withdrawal from the European Union at the beginning of January 2021, made for tension. Jersey started issuing licences - under what the French said were unexpected conditions - for fishing in its waters. France and the fishing interests in the area objected. The protest was planned for waters around Jersey's main port. In addition to the planned protest by the French fleets, France indicated it would include its existing power supply to Jersey as a counter in solving the disagreement.
