There are no mammals
The island, the closest of New Zealand's Campbell Island group to the Antarctic, is inaccessible by sea and no mammals have been introduced there in any way including by humans. The island is home to several varieties of breeding bird colonies, insects, and vegetation of interest to scientists. It has a deep peat layer, into which breeding petrels burrow.
