The Defence of the Realm Act
The Defence of the Realm Act (DORA) in the UK came into force during the first week of the First World War. It was amplified several times during the course of the war to enable extraordinary wartime emergency powers in military, social, business and economic areas, in addition to ruling out certain peacetime activities which included flying kites, starting bonfires, buying binoculars, feeding wild animals bread, discussing naval and military matters or buying alcohol on public transport. DORA was intended purely as a wartime measure, but remained in effect in the UK in various capacities until 1921.
