The decline and fall of the Roman Empire, and the history of early Christianity and of Europe
Gibbons's largest and most referenced work is "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire", published in six volumes between 1776 and 1788. It covers the period from 98 to 1590 (from the age of Trajan to the taking of Constantinople by the Turks), the history of early Christianity, the Roman State Church and of Europe, and discusses the decline of the Roman Empire. It was hailed at the time and still remains a classic, for its reach of scholarship and for its style, critical nature and quality of language.
