She cited the effect on her mental health of the requirement to meet the press, and withdrew "because the best thing for the tournament, the other players and my well-being is that I withdraw so that everyone can get back to focussing on the tennis". She continued to meet members of the public. She withdrew from Wimbledon also, but before the tournament began.
