A ship ran aground in the Suez Canal and blocked the waterway
The ship was the container Ever Given, 400m long (1,312ft), weighing over 200,000 tonnes and carrying 18,300 containers. Strong winds blew it until it was diagonal across the waterway with bow and stern dug into either bank. It remained wedged for 6 days. About 12% of the world's trade relies on the Suez Canal to give speedy and ready access to destinations. The eventual clearance of the blockage entailed massive excavation of the bank of the Canal, work by many tugs and an exceptionally high tide. By the end more than 369 ships on either side of the blockage were waiting to pass.
