The sardines follow cold ocean waters northwards up the eastern coast of South Africa. They spawn in the cool waters of the Agulhas Bank off the southernmost point of South Africa, and swim north inshore of the strong, warm offshore (and south-flowing) Agulhas current. They swim in billions and the run annually sparks a feeding frenzy among ocean (and human) predators.
