Love of or expertise in archery
The book, "Toxophilus" (Lover of the Bow) was the first book in English on the subject of archery. Ascham was a British humanist, scholar, and writer, famous for his prose style, his promotion of the vernacular, and his theories of education. The book was dedicated to King Henry VIII, who granted Ascham a pension of £10 a year, which was confirmed and augmented by his son Edward VI.
