Over 10,000 dogs are killed at this festival for human consumption every year. There are various reports of inhumane treatment, including torture, caused celebrities and others to protest against the Festival. However The festival organizers claim that the dogs are killed humanely and that eating dog meat is no different to eating pork or beef, one Prof Peter J. Li has claimed that some of the dogs eaten are are stolen household pets.
