The house was built in 1893 for the superintendent of the US Naval Observatory. In 1974, Congress authorised its transformation to an official residence for the Vice President. Gerald Ford's VP, Nelson Rockefeller, primarily used the home for entertaining as he had a residence in Washington. It was 1977 before a VP (Walter Mondale) lived there full-time.
