The Soviet Union's Luna programme was the first to reach the Moon with unmanned spacecraft in 1959; the only manned missions to date, starting with Apollo 11 in 1969 and ending with Apollo 17 in 1972, have been by the USA's NASA programme. In 2020 NASA announced a planned mission, named Artemis 3, to land two astronauts on the Moon in 2024 to spend a week gathering data.
