The law of elasticity
Although he said later that he had been aware of the concept in 1660, when he wae 25, he did not publish the discovery until 1678. The law states that, for relatively small deformations of an object, the displacement or size of the deformation is directly proportional to the deforming force or load, and under these conditions the object returns to its original shape and size upon removal of the load, or to put it more simply that the force needed to extend or compress, e.g,.a spring by some distance is proportional to that distance.
