In bridges with a span which can be swung upwards
The bascule is the movable section of the road crossing the bridge, a name also sometimes used to describe the bridge itself. Examples are Tower Bridge in London, UK, Birkenhead Bridge in Port Adelaide, Australia, and Palace Bridge in Saint Petersburg , Russia.
