Unsaturated compounds of hydrogen, fluorine and carbon (hydrofluoroolefins)
Chlorofluorocarbons powered most aerosol-delivered products, including spray paint, until 1978 when they were banned after it was discovered that they contributed to the depletion of the ozone layer. Hydrocarbons alone, such as butane, were popular until the 1980s but have largely been replaced. The propellant is mixed with the paint in the can.
