The presidential election in 2020 had been stolen from him and "the American people"
Congress was sitting in joint session in the Capitol at the time in order to formalise President-elect Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election. Trump called on his supporters, many of them armed, firstly to "fight like hell" and, finally, to march up to the Capitol "to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard". During and after the speech people, eventually en masse, crowded round, and then broke into, the Capitol calling for the Vice President to be hanged and other people in Congress, plus their police defenders, to be killed. In the course of the riot they also broke into and raided House and Senate offices. Ten people died or were killed as a result of the attack, five during the riot and the rest subsequently.
