In 1928 a young woman agreed to marry, but then hours before the wedding eloped with her cousin whom she had loved since they were children, following which the brother of the person she had been to marry lay in wait and shot and killed the cousin. She was severely beaten and left for dead. She lived the rest of her life as a recluse, never marrying, and died in 1987. Lorca kept newspaper cuttings about the murder.
