The Spanish-South American War
The first step was Spain's seizure of the Chincha Islands off the coast of Peru. The islands are an important source of guano which was a major part of Peru's income. The war was a series of coastal and naval battles between Spain and its former colonies of Peru, Chile, Ecuador and Bolivia from 1865 to 1866. Ultimately the Spanish fleet vacated the islands and withdrew.
