Kenya
The area was declared a protected National Reserve in 1973. The indigenous people, the semi-nomadic Endorois, were evicted from the land by the Kenyan government in 1973 when it was declared a National Reserve, but won a ruling from the African Commission, adopted in 2010 by the African Union, that the expulsion from their ancestral lands was illegal. As at 2021 there has been limited progress on implementing the decision.
