France
The Marquesas Islands group lies about 852 mi (1,370 km) northeast of Tahiti and about 3,000 mi (4,800 km) west of Mexico (the nearest continental land mass). France claimed the Islands in 1842, and in 1870 incorporated them into French Polynesia. The impressionist painter Paul Gauguin eventually settled and died there.
