Citizen military forces
They were soldiers of Ancient Greek city states, drawn from the farmers and artisans, with shields and light armour but without professional training or heavy duty military equipment. They supplemented the professional soldiery, and in fact formed the bulk of the armies. In the modern Hellenic Army, the word hoplite is used to refer to an infantryman.
