Schlosskirche (Castle Church), Wittenberg
The German priest, theologian, hymnodist and ex-Augustinian friar, Martin Luther, sent a scholarly treatise which he had written, "Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences", to his Bishop in Wittenberg. Luther rejected several of the teachings of the Church at the time. His refusal to back down from his writings led to his trial for heresy before Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, at a Diet in Worms, Germany, in 1521, followed by excommunication and condemnation as an outlaw. His treatise became known as "The Ninety-five Theses".
