The first Olympic Games to be held in a communist country
They were held in Moscow, USSR. The Games were boycotted by 66 countries because of the SovietAfghan War, and the 14 Eastern Bloc countries boycotted the next Games (in 1984) in retaliation. South Africa was invited back, after a 32-year international ban, to the 1992 Summer Olympics which were also the last Games to stage the Winter and Summer Olympics in the same year.
