Sea-going paddle steamer
The PS Waverley was built in Scotland in 1946 to replace a ship of the same name which was destroyed in World War II. Initially she worked the LNER's Firth of Clyde steamer route but since she was restored in 1973 operates passenger excursions around the coast. Paddle steamers plied coastal routes from the early 19th century, in the USA and UK, ferried between islands and a mainland, and from 1819 crossed the Atlantic from the UK to the US wit the last crossing being made in September 1969 to March 1970.
