Sweeping electoral victory for a leader and party which did not suit them
The military had previously had a more than equal share in a nominally elected government. Protests at the actions mushroomed and spread into civil war, despite brutal reaction by the military. The coup regime prosecuted the elected leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, with multiple charges some of them at a level which when successful carried lengthy prison sentences as well as preventing her from standing for election again.
